Thought i would share this with all of you. After fishing Pewaukee about 3 times a week since the opener, hookin into 4 fish the biggest a 44" i finally hooked into a nice fish. I took my cousin out fishing with me who as only musky fished once before. After fishing for a solid three hours with nothing to show, right before dark he throws a topwater on and the third cast hooks into a 35", his first musky. We continue to fish with topwaters as it gets darker out. I decide to change and put on a chart DCG, after three casts I see a fish boil about 25ft from the boat. As anyone would i throw 5 ft in front of it and luckly on the 3 crank of the reel the fight was on. Reeling it about 5ft something goes wrong with the reel and it won't turn i go into to panic mode with f-bombs left and right. I thought for sure i would lose it with the line slack, i didn't know what was going on so i threw the rod down and proceded to hand over hand pull it in. With my cousin on the net within seconds he nets it like a pro with it thrasing and jumping around. It was quite the adventure none the less!

That's an awesome story. A couple years ago something similar to that happened on Lake of the Woods. My Dad got a backlash and as he was picking it out he decided to lift the bait to make sure it hadn't snagged on the rocks we were casting. As he did so a fish smoked his bucktail and hooked up. Not only did he have a backlash, but also several twists of line around his tip top. He (sort of) set the hook then couldn't do anything, so I grabbed the line and pulled the fish in hand over fist. Good thing it didn't put up much of a fight (looked to be in bad shape based on its body condition)!

Congrats! Way to stick with it! I can't imagine hand lining a 50"er.

You got your sweatshirt all slimy!! Nice fish. Great job getting it in.

Let's see if this will work yet again! Take it from me. Your next 50 will come quicker than the first!

yeah you were spot on with that one. i lost one tonight that was 50+. It hit right at boatside and only got like 2 barbs on the back hook on a DCG. I fought it around the boat and thought it was ready to be netted, my cousin reached as far as he could and got its head in the net, but the hooks pop off and it turned itself around and basically swam out of the net. the saddest thing i've ever seen

Thats pretty sweet man...I saw this pic on lake-link. I fish pewaukee daily and we moved a few 50+ this week and boated a 49 the other day on a topwater which was the second topwater 49 this year...cant seem to get the 50 yet but we will see what happens in the next few days...Seems like the big fish swapped sides of the lake with all the west winds we have been getting. I know where a few pigs have been lurking cauz we raised em e few times
