Hey Brian. Ive never done the river thing with livebait but my buddies and I usually fish our suckers rite over the side of the boat, so you can actually just barely see them. We do well fishing that way over suspended fish, but its actually a great way to fish shallow water. You dont have to worry about snagging your bait. Its been my experience that when a ski wants the sucker it dont matter how close to the boat the bait is, its gettin crushed!

Brian-
I do not fish rivers either...however if you have multiple rod holders, I would say give both a try. Try a down rod and also try a sucker on a float 15' behind the boat. Like Keith said...suspended fish definetly come up on baits and are not scared of the boat. Also...following fish may just happen to see a live sucker if they refuse the artificial they had just been interested in following to the boat.

Keith is going to help develop a river sucker rig with me.
